Mr Webster tells us that Belief is “confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof”.  This weekend presented me with two examples of things that are now definately true, but still hard to believe.

Let us start with the Miracle on the Hudson, a pilot realizing that birds have taken out his engines believes the best course is to set his plane down in the icey waters of the Hudson river.  He and his crew deftly “land” the plane on the Hudson River and then help ALL of his passengers walk on water to the waiting ferrys and tugs that appeared on the scene.

Then after listening to the East Coast Sports bias decry them for weeks, we have the Arizona Cardinals.  A team whose very name speaks improbability.  A team that miserably lost 3 of their last 4 regular season games. A team whose home stadium regularly seats more fans of Cardinal opponents.  A team that believed in themselves and each other when NO ONE else did is now going to the super bowl.

In both of these miraculous events we are hearing a lot about Divine intervention, and that may well be true though “not immediately susceptible to rigourous proof”.  What I believe is that we should never under estimate the power of believing in ourselves.  Properly tempered with humility this kind of self confidence will allow us to bring into existence things that others never thought possible!
